The Benefits of Reading and Walking Together

Walking and reading a book as you go provides early literacy opportunities to young children. Sharing the reading of a book stimulates and fosters the development of strong listening and speaking skills. It can also help to build a child’s vocabulary which is important to thinking and learning. Developing early literacy skills leads to better preparation for school.

These walks together create a teaching moment with a child’s first teacher – their family. Children and their families can read the book together then discuss the text, illustrations and meaning of a great book.

These outdoor excursions provide a wonderful avenue for outreach and collaboration. They are a tool to bring reading out into the community with the goal of increasing the visibility of books.

StoryWalk® was created in 2007 by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, in collaboration with former KHL staff member Rachel Senechal, and is a registered service mark of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Our thanks to Roxanne Starkin from the Shrewsbury Public Library who developed a spreadsheet of locations across Massachusetts.
