Reading Challenge: Student Edition
12 Months, 12 Books!
The Reading Challenge: Massachusetts Student Edition gives students of all ages a chance to set and meet the goal of reading a book each month in a specific category and to share their experience within their reading community.
How the challenge works (for students and families):
Choose a book that fits the monthly challenge prompt.
Local libraries and independent bookstores are great places to seek recommendations! We also have a list of recommendations for each month. See if your school, library, bookstore, or other community organization is participating by searching through the Reading Partners list below.
Once you have read your book, bring your Passport to a participating location and tell them what you read. They will give you a sticker for that month. Collect stickers and earn prizes for reading for 4, 8, and 12 months!
Want to recommend your book to others? Fill out a “Shelf Talker” card and write what you thought about it.
Each month, the student (and a parent/guardian if the student is under 13) can fill out a short form to tell us about the book and enter into a raffle. Mass Center for the Book will run drawings for prizes. Monthly participation determines eligibility.
Have fun and Happy Reading!
How the challenge works (for organizations):
If your school, library, bookstore, or other community organization would like to become a partner, sign up using this form and we will send you Reading Challenge cards that serve as passports, and other materials to run the challenge.
Promote the challenge to the students in your network using book displays or word of mouth. We have book recommendation lists to download as well as graphics and other assets for the program under the Partner Resources page.
Every 4 months we will check in with you to see how many participants you have and how many prizes you need. We will provide prizes for reader who read for 4, 8 and 12 months. These will be small items.
Encourage participating families to fill out a short form every month to tell us about the book if they want to be entered into a raffle to win books!
Book Recommendations:
From October through January, students can submit to Letters About Literature.
