Literary Map of Massachusetts
The literary mapping project we have undertaken is a cultural tourism tool that foregrounds the richness and vitality of book culture in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
At present, it is a printed road map to Massachusetts literary heritage sites that the interested cultural tourist will want to include on a visit to the various regions of our commonwealth.
In its fuller realization as an online reference resource, the map will put those established literary heritage sites in a broader context, expanding literary history and encompassing those writers, editors, and publishers who contributed to Commonwealth literary culture even if they left no visitable trace on the terrain.
The online map also will capture the contemporary community of the book: it will locate our publishers and booksellers, our printers and binders, our writers, newspapers, and journals, our writing programs and book arts schools, our libraries, our literary organizations and our literacy programs in the towns and cities across Massachusetts where our community of the book is thriving.
