Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. Writing as “Dr. Seuss,” (as well as “Theo. LeSieg”) Geisel wrote and illustrated over forty books for children, the most famous being The Cat in the Hat.  The books have been translated into many languages and adapted into animated movies and television programs. By the time of his death in 1991, Geisel had received two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Geisel’s stepdaughter, sculptor Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, created the sculptures in the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, which is part of the Springfield Museums.  The bronze sculptures include Dr. Seuss at his drawing board as well as many favorite Seuss characters.
