Bridge St. Cemetery, George Washington Cable, 1844-1925 & Jonathan Edwards Memorial
George Washington Cable, born in 1844 in Louisiana, moved to Northampton in 1884 when his writing, critical of the racism and promoting civil rights, caused negative reactions among southerners. He became friends with Mark Twain, and went on reading tours with him. Cable died in 1925 and was buried in Bridge Street Cemetery.
Jonathan Edwards, renowned as a preacher, came to Northampton in 1727, to assist his grandfather, who was the minister at the time. When his grandfather passed away two years later, Edwards assumed the full duties of minister, remaining in the position until 1750. Edwards died in 1758 in New Jersey, but a monument in Bridge Street Cemetery honors him and his contribution to Northampton.
Information about Bridge Street Cemetery is available from the Historic Northampton Museum and Education Center.
