Conway

Pine Grove Cemetery, Archibald MacLeish, poet & playwright, Librarian of Congress, 1892-1962

 

Archibald MacLeish, born in 1892, was a Pulitzer Prize winning poet and playwright.  He attended Yale College and Harvard Law School, where he began to write poetry.  In 1928, after living as a poet in France for five years, MacLeish and his family bought a farm in Conway.  MacLeish took his oath as the ninth Librarian of Congress at the Conway Post Office on July 10, 1939.  In 1967 he published a play titled An Evening’s Journey to Conway.  MacLeish died in 1962, and was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Conway.
