Amherst

West Cemetery, Emily Dickinson, poet, 1830-1886

Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst in 1830, and spent her life there, dying in her family home in 1886.  The author of almost 1800 poems, she remained unpublished until after her death in 1886.  She was buried in West Cemetery, along with her parents and her sister. In addition to the Dickinson graves, West Cemetery (established in 1730) holds a monument to unknown African American Union Soldiers.
