Noah Webster House, lexicographer, journalist, textbook author & spelling reformer

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, and educated at Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut, Noah Webster moved to Amherst’s Main Street in 1812. At the time he was working on An American Dictionary of the English Language, his most famous work. Webster and his family resided on Main Street until 1822, when they returned to New Haven, where Webster lived until his death in 1843. The house on Main Street was destroyed by fire in 1838.
