Mary Heaton Vorse, journalist, Summer home

Born in 1874, Mary Heaton Vorse was a labor journalist and women’s rights advocate.  She wrote for the radical journal, The Masses, as well as contributing articles to a number of newspapers, including The New York Post.  All in all she wrote hundreds of articles, as well two plays and sixteen books.  She attended the International Women’s Peace Conference in 1915.  She died in 1966 at the age of 92.  Her summer house on Amity Street was also the boyhood home of children’s poet Eugene Field.
