Mabel Loomis Todd, Dickinson editor, Residence 1886-1898

Best known as the first editor of Emily Dickinson’s posthumously published poems, Mabel Loomis Todd was a friend of the Dickinson family and corresponded with Emily, although they never met face to face. Todd herself was a writer of both fiction and nonfiction and also founded the Amherst Historical Society.  The Society now runs the Amherst History Museum at the Strong House, where there is a room devoted to Todd.

Todd and her husband built their house in 1886, having purchased land from Emily’s brother Austin Dickinson, and sold it in 1898. It currently operates as a bed-and-breakfast. To contact the 1886 Todd House bed-and-breakfast, call 413.259.1700.
