Howard Garis, children’s writer, aka “Victor Appleton,” Residence 1950-1958

Howard Garis was author of the very popular Uncle Wiggly stories for children. Garis also wrote under the pen name “Victor Appleton” for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, including over thirty books in the Tom Swift series.  He lived in the house at 97 Spring St., known as “The Dell,” from 1950 to 1958, when he moved to 279 Amity St.  He died there in 1962.  The Dell, built in 1907, now houses offices for the Five Colleges.
