Eugene Field, children’s poet, Boyhood home

Born in Saint Louis in 1850, Eugene Field came to live in Amherst after his mother died in 1856. He went on to become a newspaper writer and editor, but it is as children’s poet he is best remembered. Before his death in 1895, Field wrote many poems for children, including “Wynken, Blynken and Nod” and “The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat.” He was cousin to Samuel Minot Jones, whose fortune helped found the Jones Library.
